Cystocentesis is the collection of a sterile urine sample directly from the urinary bladder using a needle. This method allows you to collect a urine sample that has not been contaminated by the lower genital tract, and so is it very useful for diagnostic tests such as urinalysis and urine culture. Decompressive cystocentesis is a method to drain the urinary bladder using a needle. This is very helpful in situations of urethral obstruction when the urinary bladder is maximally distended.
