In this video we demonstrate how to perform cystocentesis.
Cystocentesis is the collection of a sterile urine sample directly from the urinary bladder using a needle. This method allows you to collect a urine sample that has not been contaminated by the lower genital tract, and so is it very useful for diagnostic tests such as urinalysis and urine culture.
Decompressive cystocentesis is a method to drain the urinary bladder using a needle. This is very helpful in situations of urethral obstruction.
Cystocentesis is best performed using ultrasound guidance. The patient is placed in dorsal recumbency and the skin is aseptically prepped. The patient should be able to relax comfortably in dorsal recumbency without excessive restraint. In very anxious patients, gentle sedation is helpful.
When ultrasound guidance is used, ensure that the needle is introduced in the same plane of the ultrasound beam, so that the entire needle can be visualized.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES MADE EASY (FOR VETS, TECHS, NEW GRADS)
We are building a library of short, instructional videos to help make emergencies more fun and less stressful:) These are designed especially with new graduates of vet school in mind, but everyone is welcome.
