This winter, head to the Whistler Golf Club and experience 40,000 square feet of winter wonderland. Created by master carver David Xu Rui and his talented team, the Ice Kingdom is the province’s largest snow sculpture exhibit and it is here to wow the whole family.

Mr. Xu Rui started Ice Kingdom as a celebration of a 300-year-old Chinese tradition of gathering to create snow and ice sculptures. His team, consisting of 20 globally recognized artists, has been working together for over two decades creating frosted wonders all over the world.

The snowy wonderland is a month-long work featuring a stunning large-scale snow castle, an extensive snow maze, a slippery snow slide and magnificient and impressive snow sculptures. There is also food and drink options served at the Whistler Golf Clubhouse as well as live entertainement.

While Mother Nature had some wet days planned earlier this month, the team has been working very hard to keep this winter fantasy alive so you and your family and friends can enjoy its beauty all winter long.

Tickets: $5 off if bought online, $31 for adults, $21 for seniors and children. From March 1st – March 11th, all students and locals in Sea to Sky Country will receive $5 off any single ticket OR $20 off family passes. All LOCAL students will also be able to buy tickets for just $10! This promotion must be validated with proof of residence upon entrance.

    Whether you've been a resident for 30 years, 3 years, or 3 months, your input matters. The RMOW is leading a process to update Whistler's Official Community Plan and Vision, with a number of opportunities for community input.

    Whistler Vision and OCP

    Save the date! The next opportunity for the community to provide feedback on Whistler’s Vision and Official Community Plan is at an open house on Monday, June 25. Details will be released in the coming weeks.

    Phase One of the 2018 update to Whistler’s community vision and OCP began in January, and Phase Two is continuing this summer.

    Overview

    The goal is to update the current realities and policies of the 2011 OCP to address changing factors and conditions affecting the resort community, as well as recent RMOW studies, strategies and initiatives over the past five years, and closer engagement with the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations.

    Timeline

    The first step to update the OCP is to revisit the guiding vision. Many people were involved in creating the Whistler2020 vision, and this new process is meant to build on its foundation. Whistler2020 was developed in 2004 and 2005, and the detailed vision has served Whistler over the years that followed, helping to inform decisions and dialogue. Progress towards the vision has been tracked and reported annually. Learn more: www.whistler.ca/monitoring.

    The second part of the project will focus on updating the OCP and will be a continuation of the 2010-2013 OCP process. Between 2010 and 2012, there was an intensive 20-month period of community engagement, policy development, document preparation and referrals.

    Community Engagement

    March Community Engagement

    In March, a variety of community engagement activities were available as part of the process to update Whistler’s Community Vision and Official Community Plan (OCP). The recent community engagement process builds on over 2,500 hours of community time in 2010-2011 to develop the OCP and on the detailed community planning that has occurred to date.

    The March 2018 engagement activities included a community forum, ideabooks, an online survey, social media and postcards to the future. The engagement activities provided community members with a variety of opportunities to participate in the visioning process. A total of 1105 responses were received through all sources of input. The process focused on vision-related content from Whistler2020 and from the 2011 draft OCP, and included the following questions:

    A. Whistler2020 vision statement and general vision input

    • To what extent do you like this vision statement for Whistler? What do you like about the vision statement, if anything? What would you change? What words should be used?
    • What do you love about whistler today?
    • What should Whistler strive for over the next 10-20 years above all else? What are the most important achievements we should aim for?

    B. OCP Our Shared Future content: For each of the 'Our Shared Future' sections from each 2011 draft OCP chapter, the following questions were asked:

    • To what extent do you agree with this vision of the future?
    • What part of this vision is most important to you?
    • What’s missing from this vision or should be changed? What else should Whistler strive for in the future?

    C. Whistler2020 Description of Success (DOS) statements:

    • What are the top statements that describe what success in this topic area must look like in the future?
    • What critical statements (if any) are missing?

    Each engagement activity is described below, along with the associated engagement content and questions for reference (activity A, B and/or C, as described above).
